Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology
Reading Notes For: The Indian Who Wrestled with a Ghost, Myths and Legends of the Great Plains by Katharine Berry Judson (1913).
Method: Focus on plot
Mood: Suspense is built up with the young man being alone in the woods, with an owl hooting eerily, and with the sound of twigs breaking behind the man, signaling that someone is following him. The fact that the man is walking on a warpath is also spooky, as many men probably died on that path.
Twist/Plot: One twist in the story is when the ghost woman laments her son and tries to cut off the young man's foot. I would like to fill in this hole by giving a little bit of background to the woman (why she is a ghost, why she is wailing about her son, and why she tries to cut of the young man's foot -- the son could be a warrior who died on the path, perhaps he lost a foot in the battle, thus her attempting to cut off the foot of the young man?).
Twist/Plot: Another twist is when the strange man proves to be a ghost. Again, I would like to expand on why he is a ghost and why he is so strong (perhaps he is a wanderer who starved to death, thus his desire to have food?).
Mood: A sense of horror is created when the strange man turns out to be a ghost and his ribs can be seen, with the smoke from the pipe coming out from in between them.
Plot: Yet another interesting plot point is when the young man defeats the ghost and is then able to kill his enemy and steal horses -- perhaps I could create some reasoning behind why the young man is able to do these things after defeating the ghost in wrestling (perhaps he has conquered death, so to speak, by winning against a ghost?).
Main Plot Point: The most important point in the story is when the second ghost says that the young man will be able to kill his enemies and steal horses if he successfully defeats the ghost in wrestling. When the young man defeats the ghost, he is able to kill his enemy and steal horses, which leads to people believing what ghosts say.
